FESTIVAL PHOTO TOURS
Tour Information and Guidelines
Tour Guidelines: You must be registered as a level 1, 2 or 3 to register for a tour. Tri-Pods are allowed on all tours but must remain with guests at all times. All tours prices include transportation costs, admission fees and gratuities.
When selecting your tours make sure you have a planned-out schedule.
The festival format allows for speakers, tours, and workshops to happen at the same time. All day programs are presented on Thursday and the same program for that speaker will be presented again on Friday. Please plan your schedule accordingly. If a tour is full, you can go on a waiting list, email John R. Key at psaconference@gmail.com.
REFUND POLICY: Tours will not be refunded or cancelled due to weather conditions. If PSA cancels a tour, then a refund will be issued. All tours will be non-refundable after registration closes on August 22, 2022.

Member Fun Night Outing!
We will go to the Flying W Ranch for a fun-filled evening. We will arrive at the park when it opens at 5:00 pm. You will have a little over an hour to explore the ranch which is surrounded by mountains and rock formations providing photographic opportunities. There is a rodeo arena, Blacksmiths, Navajo dancers, Navajo silversmiths, and the General Store. The dinner bell will ring at 6:30 pm and following dinner, we will be entertained by the Flying W Wranglers. This will be a great night for everyone to enjoy! The Paint Mines Interpretive Park is one of El Paso County’s most unique open spaces. The Paint Mines are named for their colorful clays that were collected by American Indians to make paint. Brightly colored bands, caused by oxidized iron compounds, are found in varying amounts throughout the many different layers of clay. The Park is approximately 750 acres and have evidence of human life as far back as 9,000 years ago. The park features fantastic geological formations including spires and hoodoos that form through erosive action that creates incised gullies and exposed layers of selenite clay and jasper. There will be unique beauty at any direction you may look.

You will travel to Prairie Canyon Ranch, Castle Rock, CO which will be your shooting location for a full 2-hour photo shoot with the “Birds of Prey”. There will be 5 different stations and 6 different species. The 5 stations will be Bald Eagle, Peregrine Falcon, Barn Owl, Great Horned Owl and Red-Tailed Hawk. Kin Quitugua, a master falconer and long-time environmental educator will be displaying the birds in natural settings, flight, portrait, close- ups and more. You will be divided into five groups with everyone being able to rotate through every station until you have shots at each station. Once all groups have rotated through all stations, they will release a “Harris Hawk” in flight.
Tour # 04—Cripple Creek and Vindicator Gold Mines Tour, Tuesday, September 20, 2022

WARNING: Elevation will be 9,708 feet, please consider elevation if you have health concerns
This tour will begin in Cripple Creek, Colorado where you will take a ride on the Cripple Creek & Victor Narrow Gauge Railroad. The Railroad reveals scenic wonders around every curve as century-old steam locomotive transports you back to the gold mining days of Cripple Creek & Victor, Colorado. The train makes stops for special points of interest, impressive photo spots, and Echo Valley. The train also has open seating and there are Aspens throughout the route. You will then travel just a few miles to Victor, Colorado to the Vindicator Valley Trail. The trail is known as the ‘Trails of Gold" that takes you past many 1890’s gold mines. Numerous historical buildings and views of Sangre de Cristo mountains will provide for some great photography. There are several different structures and old mining equipment to photograph throughout the trail.

The Park hosts several over 300’ rock formations that has a back-drop of Pikes Peak and blue skies. There are 17 different iconic rock formations in the Park. The iconic balanced rock as well as the famous “Kissing Camels” rock formations. The largest outcroppings in the park, "North Gateway," "South Gateway," "Gray Rock," and "Sleeping Giant" are composed primarily of Lyons Formation, a stone made of fine sand from ancient sand dunes. The Siamese Twins rock “window” offers a spectacular (and highly photographed) view of Pikes Peak. There is always the possibility of bighorn sheep sightings and several different birds. The park also hosts wildflowers, wild asparagus, old one-seed junipers and different trees.

WARNING!!!!!! The summit is 14,110 feet elevation, you should not take this tour if you have health concerns in elevation.
The Cog train will take you 9 miles up to the summit of Pike’s Peak. The summit is at 14,110 feet elevation and gives you a 360-degree view of the surrounding area. Some have described the summit as the “gateway to heaven.” On the way up there are views of fascinating wildlife, and visitors frequently see elk, deer, and yellow-bellied marmot en route, plus Pikes Peak is home to one of Colorado’s largest bighorn sheep herds.
