  The Golden Gate

Judy Burr Comments and Ratings:
I think the lighting on the bridge tower is very nice and the stars on the bridge add interest. The tower is well placed in the frame and leads me into the picture since it is on the left. I feel the exposure and color are good. I suppose common scenes like this tend to become cliché, but a good picture is still good in my opinion. I find the dark area in the lower left distracting since I can't see all of the tower. However, you may not have been able to get to a different position!

A nice image but, as you point out, nothing very exciting. Good colors. Any element of human interest would do a lot to add impact to a travel image of a familiar landmark. Nothing unique or exciting about the composition: the dark headland at bottom left is not too attractive and the bridge leads the viewer's eyes out of the frame at right.

  Castle Geyser

Judy Burr Comments and Ratings:
I love this picture and think you did a good job of capturing the geyser. I was there last year too so maybe I am prejudiced! The geyser is well placed in the picture with lines leading to it. The color and exposure are good and I think the geyser water against a darker area of the sky adds impact and makes it stand out more. I would not crop this as the area around the geyser is part of the story--what effect the geyser has on the surrounding area. I don;t think the smoke is a negative--that is part of what happens at Yellowstone!

To me the most exciting things here are the colors and reflections in the water. Personally I would crop from both left and right to turn this into a vertical composition, showing just the geyser cone and its reflection in the water, but that would be an entirely different image. (Still, you asked!)
